ESRC Festival of Social Sciences

This year we were part of two ESRC Festival of Social Sciences events. Both events were co-designed and co-organised with the Community Foundation Surrey, Surrey Youth Focus, Eikon, and Mindworks Surrey.

  1. Smart Socials and the Digital Youth (see event information here). Dr Beatrice Hayes (Lead) and Prof Dawn Watling (Co-Lead) co-organised with charity partners a series of bite-size online events, including talks from PhD Candidates (and fellow lab members) Gemma Rides and Zain Khan, and Dr Yvonne Skipper (Glasgow University), and a final in person event.
  2. Tackling the Emotionally-based School Non Attendance (EBSNA) Conundrum Together (see event information here). Dr Jess Kingson (Lead) and Prof Dawn Watling (Co-Lead) co-co-organised with charity partners an in person event exploring key concepts (Dr Dave Damon), research on EBSNA interventions (Dr Kate Lester, University of Sussex), evaluating research design (Jess and Dawn), and workshop discussing applications for the Stages of Participation Framework.

Smart Socials and the Digital Youth

This series of events was designed to interrogate the risks and the benefits for young people using social media. We sought to explore how we can best support young people to have positive experiences online and to know how to seek support when needed.

Tackling the EBSNA Conundrum Together

This event was designed to raise awareness of EBSNA, considering preventative work for young persons at risk of EBSNA to supporting the young persons who are experiencing EBSNA. We explore interventions and Frameworks to support those working with young people.
